Starting the New Year Right!
By Yadira Laguerre
The end of the year can be an exciting time. The promise of a fresh start helps us forgive ourselves of things left undone in the past. For too many, however, this excitement passes after the first week of January. Don’t let that happen to you! Here are a few simple steps to help you stay focused on your goals past the first few days:
Journal: Writing your plans is a biblical concept that any successful person knows to put in place. However, did you know that writing about your every day life is just as helpful? Getting your daily ideas, emotions, victories and temporary set backs down in writing helps to keep you aware of your overall quality of life. It also serves as a way of looking back and seeing how far you have come toward achieving your goals.
Accountability: Pick at least one person for each of your goals and tell them about what you plan to accomplish. Knowing that people are aware of your intentions helps to keep you on track.
Visuals: Do you want to lose weight in the New Year? Maybe get a more fulfilling career? Keep encouraging images around you. These serve as silent reminders of the dreams you set out to reach in the beginning of the year.
Rewards: Keep your eyes on the prize all year long by celebrating milestones and small victories. These celebrations can be as simple as affirming yourself in the mirror, or getting together with loved ones. Reward yourself for every step you take towards your dreams and you will stay motivated to run to the finish line.
I believe 2008 will be your best year thus far. Here’s to New Beginnings!
